Turn me On, Turn me Off

These things make a person buy - or not buy your house.

Two recent surveys by the Nationwide and C&G have highlighted some of the things which can sway the decision to buy when someone views your house. In fact, it seems that the viewer may make the decision on your house before they even walk through the door. Here are some of the things which can make a viewer decide not to buy your house. Most of these are things which they could change for little or no cost – but they don’t buy your house because of it!

I'm sorry Mr Gnome but you will have to move out for a while.....

Turn-offs
Musical doorbells
Old banger parked in the drive
Garden gnomes
Squeaky front gate
Pebble dashed walls
Outdoor fairy lights
Wind chimes
Beware of the Dog sign
Water feature in the front garden
Silly house name
Threadbare carpets
Horseshoes up the staircase
Smell of pets or visible pet hair
Built-in bar
Cabinets with ornaments and figurines
Cork walls
Singing fish and other musical novelties
Shrine to a pop star or the royal family
Seventies wallpaper
Built-in fish tank
The smell of stale cigarette smoke
Mirrored ceilings
Polystyrene wall or ceiling tiles
An old bathroom suite

So if you are serious about selling, find the instruction book for the door chime and re-programme it, hide the gnomes and the singing fish and paint over any dated wallpaper.

These are the things which people say they liked. Again many of these are things which they homeowner will take with them when they move (or at least you would hope so in the case of the children!) – but they still help sell the house!!

Turn-0ns
A pretty house name
Bay windows
Cat sitting on the window sill
Mown lawn
A freshly painted front door
Potted plants and flowers climbing the side of the house
Gravel drive
Friendly neighbours
Wind chimes
Crackling open fire
Smell of freshly baked bread
Creaking wooden floors
Children's drawings stuck on the fridge
Warm Aga in the kitchen
Children playing in the back garden
Wooden beams
Fresh flowers in a vase
Photographs of a happy family
Glittering Christmas tree
A walk-in wardrobe
Under floor heating
A Jacuzzi

Whilst it would be a little over the top to put in a Jacuzzi or under floor heating to sell your house, many of the things listed here would be easy to add to your home. Interesting that wind chimes turn up in both lists, so maybe it would be best to pack them away too, just to be on the safe side!
