A Great Garden Will Help Sell Your Home![]() Want to move up the property ladder? Make sure you've also got a rake, a hoe and a lawnmower at the ready … This is according to Saga, who discovered that millions of Brits are adding value to their property by carrying out garden makeovers. An overwhelming 82 per cent of Brits say the garden is an extremely important feature when house-hunting, according to the survey of 2,411 people1. And it is also the area of the home which gets the most attention when the keys are handed over. According to the poll, most people spend at least £500 improving their garden and believe that improvements they've made, excluding the effect of general house price rises, have increased the value of their homes by more than £7500. Nicholas Leeming, director of propertyfinder.com comments: “Gardens play a hugely important role in selling homes and can add significant value to a property. Our research shows that a well tended front garden is the most important factor that attracts buyers to a street. Back gardens are even more important.” “Simply having a garden can enhance an average property's value by perhaps up to 15% as a rule of thumb. As always, the closer matched the style of garden is to your target market, the quicker you can expect to sell and the more money you can bank on raising.” This trend is confirmed by the success of UKTV’s 'Weed It And Reap', where TV gardener Sven Wombwell and property specialist Michael Holmes show how a garden makeover alone can help sell property faster - and for a better price. ![]() Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive of Saga comments, “Whether you're improving the kerb appeal of your house in preparation for sale or enhancing your living space purely for pleasure, our research shows that the impact a garden has on both property prices and emotional fulfilment can never be underestimated.” Interestingly, the poll has revealed that the under 30s age group are on the ball when it comes to increasing the value of their properties. An overwhelming 44 per cent of people aged 19 to 30 say they have significantly increased the value of their homes by making improvements to the exterior of the property and the garden. 1) Research conducted online between 8th and 15th March 2006.
