DIY Domestics A Nightmare For UK LoversNest building with your partner may not always enhance your relationship20th May 2009 When budgets are tight and home improvements need to be done, the onus generally falls upon two people to get the tools – you and your partner. However, laying a new patio with a significant other isn’t likely to cement a relationship. A recent survey has found that more than half of us are likely to argue with ‘the other half’ when carrying out DIY tasks. Our partners get the brunt of our frustrations, ahead of family members, friends and neighbours. Major causes of friction cited are lack of knowledge [53%], cost [34%] and general stress [29%], as well as not having the correct tools for the job [20%]. According to the survey by Homebase and Nectar, only 6% of us will now get a professional in to help with the DIY. Instead, to save money (20%) and time (53%), many of us are keen to get our nearest and dearest involved with our home improvements. Over a quarter of us would consider holding a ‘painting party’ or ‘DIY do’ in a bid to get our friends and family to muck in with the hard work. While others have even resorted to bribery to borrow expertise – taking our friends out for dinner, buying them personal gifts or even parting with our hard-earned cash to get them involved. However, on the brighter side 92% consider themselves to be either good or very good wielding a hammer, drill or saw. But if that’s the case, what’s all the arguing about? ![]() TV’s dynamic decorating duo, Colin and Justin said: “We’ve been working together for years helping the world put right its decorating wrongs, so we know the true power of a DIY double act. It might not always be harmonious but it’s faster, cheaper and much more fun to get things done with the help of friends and family.” To help those planning some home improvements this bank holiday weekend Homebase is going to be giving home improvers a helping hand on saving money when it joins Nectar, the UK’s leading loyalty programme, with customers able to earn double points on all store and online purchases from Friday 22 to Sunday 31 May.
