House Names Show That British
Desire A Rural Idyll

9th February 2009

Britons still hanker after the rural life according to the results of the new Halifax Estate Agents' House Names Survey.  Our homes are clearly a refuge from the everyday pressures of urban life with Britain's top 50 most popular house names dominated by countryside and rural themes, reflecting a retreat from the stresses and strains of modern life.

Rose Cottage is Britain's most popular house name, coming in at first place.  The Cottage is now the second most popular house name, having been knocked-off the top spot it held in 2003.  The Barn came in third position, followed by The Coach House in fourth and The Bungalow in fifth.

Across Britain's regions, Rose Cottage was the most popular name in five different regions (North, Yorkshire and Humberside, West Midlands, South West and Scotland) and was featured within the top ten in four other regions (Wales, South East, East Midlands and North West.)  Greater London and East Anglia were the only regions not to include Rose Cottage within their top ten house names.

The top five house names in Britain (2003 position in brackets) are:

In a similar trend to the last survey, the house names in Scotland and Wales reflect a strong national identity. Names such as Rowanlea, Hawthorne Cottage, Burnside, The Steading and Beechwood are favourites in Scotland, while Bryn Amel (Hill Breeze), Cartref (Welcome), Ty Gwyn (New House) and Brynheulog (Sunny Hill) are evident in Wales.
