Views Enhance Coastal Living

Luxurious fivebedroom house which overlooks picturesque Chichester Harbour

Few homes can boast such panoramic views as the luxurious fivebedroom house which overlooks the picturesque Chichester Harbour. This superb old English style home has been extended to bring the outdoors indoors and make the very best use of natural light.

The homeowners, who are yachting enthusiasts, asked local developers Langstone Construction to extend their period property with a 2500 sq ft living and kitchen area. The main priority was that the living room could be opened up completely to make the most of the views and JELD-WEN’s new Canberra patio door provided the perfect solution.

“We had seen the new Canberra patio door in a merchant’s display and with its sliding folding mechanism and the fact it opened out fully meant it was just what the owners wanted,” explains Mike Ison of Langstone Construction. “We used four Canberras in total, three in the living room and one in the kitchen, which makes the garden an extension of the home when the doors are open, giving a light, airy and spacious feel.”

The extension to the property means the house is now perfect for entertaining, with great views and a real ‘wow’ factor when you walk into the new living and kitchen area. The house has been cleverly designed to maintain its original period look to the front of the house, whilst the contemporary extension offers all the benefits of modern living, where natural light and space are central themes.

The Canberra patio door was chosen in an attractive Baltic Oak finish, which complemented the limed Oak floor and attractive cream curtains and soft furnishings that are reminiscent of the interior of a luxury yacht. The home has a nautical theme that is reflected in all aspects of the décor, from the iridescent blue kitchen units to the drift wood furnishings and nautical paintings on the wall.

For unrivalled views of the nearby harbour, Langstone Construction created a magnificent roof terrace, which is reached via the bedrooms or a spiral staircase from the patio area, which again creates the impression of a luxury liner.

JELD-WEN’s French doors were fitted to each South-facing bedroom to introduce even more light into the home and enable the family to walk out onto the new roof terrace. JELD-WEN’s timber window were chosen for the unique ‘eyebrow’ arches that are traditional features in this type of period property. Painted black, like the French doors, the windows create a stunning effect against the traditional red brick of the house and make a striking contrast between the attractive cream exterior walls and Baltic Oak-finished Canberra doors. Mike Ison comments:”The simple design of the windows enabled us to maintain clear sight lines around the corners of the home without restriction. The result is a much more open and airy feel to the living area with the best possible views of the harbour.”

As well as its aesthetic benefits, the Canberra has also been designed to keep the worst of the British weather at bay, which is particularly useful so close to the sea. The attractive hardwood door panels are supplied with 24mm Low E insulating glass units that help make a home more energy efficient and also meets with Part L requirements 2002 but it can be specified to meet with 2006 requirements for special orders. Canberra has a 30 year guarantee on all external timber components, plus a 10 year guarantee against manufacturing defects.
