A Greener Lifestyle At The BBC Summer Festival
11-15 June, The NEC, Birmingham
It’s one of the hot topics of the moment – how can we all do our bit to help counteract the effects of global warming and protect our planet? It can be difficult to translate all the advice given on television and in the newspapers into practical measures that we can all take every day, but this June at The NEC, the BBC Summer Festival will be doing just this. Running as a theme throughout the show, greener living will be under the spotlight and nowhere more prominently than in the brand new Sustainable Future Feature.
Positioned centrally in the show as part of the Countryfile magazine area, the Sustainable Future Feature will have four sections focusing on different issues and a central Green Clinic which will host enlightening talks by celebrity and key industry figures. Speakers will range from well known figures such as John Craven, Oliver Heath and Ben Fogle to respected property writer, Tina Jesson and Jacob Tompkins from Waterwise. Topics covered will include saving water, how to go green in your garden, the Eco home and green gadgets and will inspire listeners to do their bit at home.
Surrounding the Green Clinic, the first of the four sections of the feature will be asking visitors to look at how they can Save Energy. From insulating homes and buying products with reduced emissions to establishing energy saving habits, this area will be a treasure trove of totally practical ideas. The second section will be looking at Greener Motoring and Renault will be on hand to offer advice on what to look for when choosing a “green” car and what the new environmental labelling on cars really means. The third section will look at how we can Save Resources. With only 17% of our waste being recycled annually, we have a long way to go in this area. Once again, there will be plenty of practical tips for what we can all do to help address this problem. The final section will be encouraging visitors to Shop Fairly without it costing a fortune and explaining the truth behind labels such as “organic” and “fair-trade”.
Elsewhere at the BBC Summer Festival, BBC Gardeners’ World Live will be supporting the green theme with a wealth of ideas and gadgets for the eco-garden. One of the spectacular show gardens, built by Toby Buckland is inspired by Carol Klein’s BBC2 green gardening project and will bring the message to life for visitors. On the Grow Your Own stage, the focus will be on how to produce the best tasting fruit, vegetables and herbs at home – thus eliminating the carbon footprint created by transporting non-local produce.
Over at the BBC Good Food Show Summer, there will also be strong support for locally produced food. In a brand new partnership with Slow Food UK, a special section of the show will be devoted to the best small local producers as nominated by the public. Both Henrietta Green’s Foodlovers’ Fairs and The Great British Food Festival will also be championing superior quality and more environmentally-friendly home produced food.
A visit to the BBC Summer Festival will be a hugely entertaining day out with entry to all shows included in one ticket. But perhaps more importantly, when the day is over, visitors will leave feeling wiser about the part they can realistically play in preserving our environment.
